2010 Tablas Creek Patelin de Tablas

Tablas Creek is one of our favorite Paso Robles wineries. There is a West and East side of Paso Robles. Tablas Creek is on the West side with its winding roads that are perfect for long bike rides. The East side is nice but much flatter and less wooded.

Steve found a more economical bottle from Tablas and we thought we would give it a try. Normally, we buy their higher end wines and have always loved their wines. How is their more price friendly fare?

Steve Says:

We usually love Tablas Creek wines, but  this one is a bit odd. Its a drinkable Grenache, Mourvedre & Syrah blend but to me it has no nose at all. It’s got nice subtle fruit with checked tannin and a clean finish, but it seems a bit young and underdeveloped.  It lacks complexity and a real personality. I suppose that’s not surprising since its a 2010, but from my experience with TC wine, I had higher hopes. I suppose there is a reason why we usually spend almost twice as much for a nicely aged Tannat or an Esprit de Beaucastel. I did some research and found out it’s fermented in stainless steel and this is probably why it doesn’t have as much character as I’d like.

Oh Tablas Creek, I have a love affair with your wine. It helps that your winery is in a beautiful section of Paso Robles that I adore. With your wooded setting, beautiful, new tasting room, and a fun, challenging drive to your destination, you build a nice anticipation. I was very excited to try your more economical wine. I think I liked it more than Steve. I found it had character for its price point. Often when you taste a $20 bottle, it may not be distinctive. That’s the challenge when tasting wine. Finding distinction. This wine was medium-bodied and smooth. You could describe it as being right down the middle on everything. That may not sound exciting but if you want something simple (and sometimes you do), this bottle does the job. I wasn’t bowled over – but I enjoyed every sip.
