55 Degree Wine is a great little wine shop in Glendale that offers wine tastings in its cavern-like basement. The tasting room is part of their wine cellar. It has a few tables and a bar area where they create cheese plates to go with the wine tasting flights. They also offer pizzas from the next door pizzeria. It’s super chill and relaxing. With our high stress jobs, we are drawn to relaxing!
While doing one of their tastings, we came across the 2008 Filus Reserve Malbec and decided to pick up a bottle.
I liked this wine better at the wine bar. Now, it could have been that I tasted it after other wines and my palate wasn’t fresh and I THOUGHT I liked it, but this time around I wasn’t as impressed. Perhaps it’s because the wine is past its prime? It’s definitely drinkable. It’s smooth and not too sweet, which is nice. It’s a little on the dry side. What I found most disappointing was the lack of any nose on this wine. It just didn’t resonate with me. I find it a little surprising because Malbecs are some of my favorite wines. We are actually thinking of visiting the Mendoza area in Argentina because we love the wine from the region almost as much as California wine. In the end, this feels like more of a daily bottle. But a pricey one!

The label says the vineyard is at a high altitude in the acclaimed Uco Valley of Mendoza, Argentina. That’s all well and good but how does the wine perform? This glass has a nice intense color, but you don’t get a whole lot more. The noticeable tannic bite and a fairly dry finish are unoffensive and palatable but there just isn’t anything else to talk about. I kept expecting it to open up and reveal more nose and flavor, but that never happened. It simply lacks nose, and distinct character. I’m not saying its bad, but in my humble opinion its overpriced. To me this would make a great $15 bottle, but at $25 I feel a bit like I’ve been robbed. It’s a dissapointing bottle because we usually look forward to a nice spicy, rich Malbec and this one simply failed to deliver.
