Gotta love a vineyard with two tastings rooms in two different cities! Our first introduction to Kenneth Volk Vineyards was at a tasting room shared with Lone Madrone in Paso Robles, CA.We then stumbled upon its cousin in Santa Maria, CA. When we saw the Santa Maria tasting room, we thought we were seeing double and of course decided to go in where we were introduced to the most amazing Aglianico (Ah-LYAH-NEE-KO)!
They have a huge wine list so you have to pick and choose what to taste or you will be carried out of there. Among the wine choices, we decided to try the Aglianico – a real stand out. We bought two bottles of it. ‘Nuff said.
This Aglianico from Kenneth Volk is medium-bodied with a dry finish that makes your mouth pucker in a nice way. It has a nice tannic structure and that’s saying something. Oftentimes tannin can come on strong like a bad date, but this one pulls you in with its smoothness. It has a great nose too! I smell a strawberry rhubarb pie with cherry notes with just a hint of chocolate. Overall it’s a really nice bottle and I highly recommend it.
4 out of 5 stars.
The ruby red color is alluring as is the black cherry nose. I think there may even be a hint of cinnamon on the nose. It made me think of french toast for just a second. The body is medium, not huge but with good complexity. It goes well with food but it also stands up to drinking it on its own. Tannin is substantial, well in check. It also shows a slight dryness on the finish. On the whole it’s a really nice bottle, kinda middle of the road in price and complexity. It’s more developed than your average daily bottle, but not quite the fancy, impress-your-friends-on-a-special-occasion kind of fare. This is our third bottle and we will certainly be buying more!
