It’s Thursday and it’s time for a work out, a home made meal and some wine as we watch Thursday night television. Tonight it’s Grey’s Anatomy and Parenthood. We must watch Parenthood because Jane is Sam Jaeger’s producing partner – he plays Joel on Parenthood – and he and Jane made Take Me Home together and are coming out with a new short this year titled Plain Clothes. Have to support! Plus we love the show.
Tonight we are drinking the second bottle in our Club W shipment. It’s a 100% Spanish Monsatrell aka Mourvedre from Jumilla, Spain, which is near Valencia. Mourvedre is the more popular name in California.
This is a really strong bottle, especially for the price point. On the nose its subtly earthy. On the palate I find some plum and a great balance between dry and sweet. I think of this bottle as more of a new world wine. Not as viney and unripe as many French Cotes Du Rhones we have had recently in the price range. I wouldn’t call it spicy but the balance and complexity is rare for a bottle at this price. I for one will definitely be shopping for more Spanish Monastrell from now on.

I did a spin class tonight for the first time ever and it kicked my butt. We got home and after a shower and cooking dinner, I was ready to sit and relax and watch TV and have some wine. We didn’t want to break the bank so we opened one of our Club W wines and again, we were pleasantly surprised. I love a good Mourvedre or I should say Monastrell. And this one is very nice. It’s full bodied and rich and earthy, with wild game flavors. I know that sounds bizarre (what’s a wild game flavor?) but when you drink it, you taste animals of the wild – haha. Bottomline, it’s a great bottle.
